3 Underrated HBO Max Movies to Watch This Weekend (June 13-15)

What movies are good to watch on HBO Max this weekend? The streamer doesn’t lack for quality content. Mountainhead, a black comedy about tech bros behaving badly, is one of the most popular films on the platform right now.

But what if you’re looking for movies that are older and a bit underrated? If that’s the case, you’re reading the right list. Watch With Us has curated a list of quality films that deserve your time and attention.

With stars like Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm and America Ferrara, these movies are guaranteed to entertain you throughout the weekend and beyond.

‘Knox Goes Away’ (2024)

The world doesn’t need another movie about a hitman, but if it’s going to get one, it might as well star Michael Keaton. He stars as John Knox, a contract killer who is about to retire. He has one last hit to pull off, though, and when it goes badly, he’s left with a big mess to clean up. Knox’s troubles don’t end there, as his estranged son, Miles (James Marsden), asks for his help in covering up a murder he committed. Knox is a good hitman but a bad father, but by helping Miles, he may find a way to make up for his past mistakes.

Knox Goes Away has a lot of plot, and sometimes, there’s too much going on. (Did I mention Knox has dementia and has a relationship with a Polish sex worker?) But Keaton makes all of this work by giving a performance that’s both a bit scary and surprisingly touching. Knox is an assassin with a guilty conscience, and his final act might doom him to a fate he’s been trying to avoid his entire life.

Knox Goes Away is streaming on HBO Max.

‘Keeping Up with the Joneses’ (2016)

Jeff and Karen Gaffney (Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher) are happily married with two kids, but their life is pretty ordinary. Things become a lot more interesting when Tim and Natalie Jones (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot) move in next door. The Joneses are good-looking, intelligent and interesting — all the things that Jeff and Karen are looking for to spice up their lives. But the Joneses are hiding a big secret — they’re spies, and their targets are none other than the Gaffneys. The two couples genuinely like each other, but will the Joneses’ personal feelings for them get in the way of completing their mission?

Keeping Up with the Joneses has a sitcom premise that’s been better executed in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (both the movie and the Amazon Prime Video series). But it’s still entertaining, if only to give the cast an excuse to be silly and get into ridiculous situations. (Fisher following Gadot in a crowded mall is a particular highlight.) Hamm is underrated as a comedic actor, and his performance here shows the lighter side of an actor still best known as Mad Men’s Don Draper.

‘Six by Sondheim’ (2013)

The 2025 Tony Awards just happened, and among this year’s nominees were Broadway actors Audra McDonald, Jeremy Jordan and Glee star Darren Criss. (Criss won Best Actor in a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending.) They all appear in Six by Sondheim, a documentary/celebration of Stephen Sondheim, who wrote some of the greatest showtunes of all time.

As you can tell by the title, the documentary showcases six songs by the famous lyricist: “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story; “Being Alive” from Company; “Opening Doors” from Merrily We Roll Along; and more. These songs are brilliantly staged, with standouts being Todd Haynes’ idiosyncratic “I’m Still Here” with Jarvis Cocker and the moving “Send in the Clowns” with McDonald and Will Swenson. While it’s best enjoyed by theater nerds, Six by Sondheim should appeal to anyone who likes to hear a good tune and the story behind its creation.

Six by Sondheim is streaming on HBO Max.
